Our Kitchen Rules Project – October 2023
Gelukshoop DRC Primary is located in the farming settlement of DREW just outside the small town of Bonnievale in the Western Cape. Here, learners are generally drawn from farm areas around the town of which the parent community of the school are mostly working on the surrounding farms and are part of the very low-income sector. With an enrollment of 101 learners, which consists of 56 girls and 45 boys most of them walk to and from school, at times ranging over 7km one way, while others have to make use of public transport paid for by their parents. A NO-FEE school and dependent on the Norms and Standards provided by the South African Department of Basic Education, the school relies on creating their own income streams and the support from the low-income parents and surrounding community.
Partnering with The Flowerbed Project NZ and our Reach a Million Kids Project we envisioned and mapped a strategy in making available more opportunities over the next two years to each and every pupil at the school, their parents and the immediate community. In broadening the available school infrastructure and resources at the school we aim to maximize each and every learner and their family’s experience as per the educational road map to render a positive educational experience.
